The AU Photo Collective (PhoCo) is a collaborative community for student photographers, visual artists, and filmmakers.

Our main aim is to help student photographers improve their photography – by connecting them with opportunities to shoot events and portraits they’re interested in, and by hosting workshops with professional photographers.

[su_column size=”1/2″ center=”no” class=””]Exhibitions
The Photo Collective hosts a thematic annual exhibition in a gallery off-campus as well as rotating on-campus exhibitions in MGC and The Bridge.

Each spring, we publish an annual photobook and also publish several zines throughout the year.

Each spring, PhoCo sets off to NYC for a weekend of gallery visits, talks, and shooting. While each visit is different, we’ve visited the galleries in Chelsea and the Lower East Side, met with photographers and gallerists such as Corinne Botz, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Michael Foley, and Jorge Garcia for the NYC Street Collective. We’ve also visited NYC attractions such as Central Park, the High Line, and caught an improv show at the Upright Citizens Brigade.

And in 2018, members of e-board attended the Society for Photographic Education Conference in Philadelphia where they attended sessions on professional practices and participated in portfolio reviews from some of the top photographers in the country.

And, of course, we’re always dreaming up our next photo adventure!

[su_column size=”1/2″ center=”no” class=””]Events
Throughout the year we organize skillsharing workshops and bring photographers and curators to campus to talk about their work. Recent events include workshops on concert photography and talk by Pulitzer-Prize winner Lucian Perkins, music photographer Janette Beckman, and curator and author Vikki Tobak.

Event Coverage
Photo Collective staff photographers have the unique opportunity to grow their portfolios by covering campus events and can also receive press passes to ticketed events. Our photographers have covered campus speakers such as Madeline Albright, concerts at the 9:30 club, and protests and rallies throughout the city.

Community Engagement
PhoCo likes to get off campus and do things in DC! Sometimes this is a photo shoot across town in a different neighborhood, but it’s a chance to be active participants in our community. For two years we worked with the NYC-based organization 100 Cameras to teach photography workshops at DC elementary schools. And in September 2018 we participated in Art All Night Tenleytown where we displayed recent work and hosted a photo booth for visitors.

Senior Portraits
Each year, PhoCo partners with photo company LifeTouch to provide the opportunities for graduating seniors to get new professional headshots.

Originally part of the The Talon yearbook, the Photo Collective was created to provide support to photographers involved in student media. PhoCo became an independent studio media organization during the Fall 2014 semester when The Talon folded.
